When purchasing a diamond engagement ring, know that diamond color is the characteristic that you should specially consider to evaluate it for quality. First, know that no diamond is absolutely colorless. But those having very tiny amount of color are called colorless diamonds or white diamonds. Since these are rare in nature, they are highly expensive to buy. Other shades of colors are judge against the white precious stone.
To identify the amount of color present in the diamond, the GIA has implemented a lettering system from D to Z. while D is awarded to colorless diamonds, later grades are indicative of the increasing amount of color. Thus up to J, the diamonds are near colorless, and, then, yellowish color increases in the stone as the grade goes up to Z.
When buying the diamond engagement rings or a pre-set engagement ring, ask the jeweler about its color grade. Better opt for the grades from K to R as these are less expensive diamonds with good quality for engagement rings.
